Affirmations
Community SpotlightFerndale, MI · Serving Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan
Affirmations is the premier community center and civic hub serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied individuals, families, and organizations across Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Established in 1989, the organization has spent more than three decades creating a safe, affirming, and welcoming environment that champions health equity, personal dignity, and community vitality. Headquartered in a dedicated, multi-level 17,000-square-foot facility in downtown Ferndale, Affirmations is one of the largest and most active LGBTQ+ community centers in the United States.
Clinical and behavioral health services form a vital foundation of the center work. Affirmations operates a state-licensed outpatient mental health clinic staffed by licensed master-level clinicians specializing in LGBTQ+ affirming care. The clinic provides accessible, sliding-scale individual therapy, couples counseling, and family therapy addressing depression, anxiety, trauma, gender identity exploration, and relationship challenges. In addition, the health wellness program delivers free and confidential rapid HIV and STI screenings, safer sex supplies, health insurance navigation, and warm referrals to regional medical specialists.
Youth empowerment and suicide prevention are central to the organization mission. The center operates a dedicated youth drop-in center providing middle and high school students with a safe, supervised after-school haven equipped with computers, homework assistance, hot meals, and recreational games. Through leadership development programs, youth advisory councils, and creative arts workshops, young people build self-confidence, forge lasting peer friendships, and develop community organizing skills in an affirming and supportive setting.
The facility serves as an essential gathering place for more than 40 peer-led support and discussion groups that meet weekly and monthly. These groups offer tailored support for transgender and nonbinary individuals, coming-out journeys, bisexual communities, sober recovery networks, and parents of queer children. Beyond direct services, the building features the Pittmann-Puckett Art Gallery, showcasing rotating exhibits by regional LGBTQ+ artists, as well as a community lending library, cafe spaces, and multipurpose meeting halls used by civic groups and cultural organizations throughout the metropolitan area.
Affirmations also leads regional public education and cultural competency initiatives, training hundreds of healthcare providers, corporate teams, educators, and social service professionals annually on inclusive practices and gender diversity. The center collaborates with statewide advocacy organizations to monitor nondiscrimination policies, promote community health equity, and coordinate civic engagement initiatives across Michigan to foster safe, welcoming environments where all individuals can thrive with dignity. The center remains dedicated to ensuring that no person faces life challenges without compassionate community support.
Individuals seeking counseling, testing services, youth programs, or community connection can visit the Ferndale center during open building hours or connect through the online portal. Community members and allies can support the mission by volunteering at the welcome desk, facilitating support groups, helping organize annual fundraising galas, or making tax-deductible financial contributions to sustain this vital community resource.
