Serves African American LGBTQ+ individuals, youth, leaders, and allies in Detroit and Southeast MichiganBlack communitiesRegistered nonprofit

LGBT Detroit is a premier community development and civil rights organization dedicated to increasing awareness, promoting wellness, and advocating for the civil rights and self-determination of African American lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals. Founded in 1994 in Detroit, the organization originated as Kick Publishing Company, producing Michigan first African American LGBTQ+ publication, before growing into a comprehensive community organization addressing systemic disparities in healthcare, housing, and civic representation across urban communities.

Headquartered in Detroit, the organization operates a vibrant community gathering center that serves as a safe and empowering haven for queer people of color. Health equity initiatives form a central component of its direct services, encompassing confidential rapid HIV testing, linkage to medical care, pre-exposure prophylaxis navigation, and holistic wellness education. Staff members and peer educators conduct street-level outreach and community-based education designed to dismantle healthcare stigmas, distribute prevention supplies, and eliminate disparities in disease prevention and treatment throughout southeastern Michigan neighborhoods.

Education, leadership development, and civic empowerment are fundamental to the organization mission. The LGBT Detroit Leadership Academy provides intensive multi-week training for emerging community organizers and social justice advocates. Fellows gain practical experience in campaign organizing, coalition building, public speaking, and board governance, establishing a pipeline of diverse leaders who advocate for equitable public policies across southeastern Michigan and beyond.

LGBT Detroit also organizes Hotter Than July, recognized as the world longest continuously running Black LGBTQ+ Pride celebration. Established in 1996, the annual multi-day cultural celebration brings thousands of residents, artists, faith leaders, and activists together for educational symposiums, candlelight vigils, cultural showcases, and the signature Palmer Park picnic. The festival serves as a vital platform for honoring African American queer history, fostering community solidarity, and celebrating cultural resilience in an affirming atmosphere.

In addition to cultural events, LGBT Detroit engages in year-round policy advocacy, tracking civil rights legislation, combating discrimination, and organizing nonpartisan voter engagement campaigns across urban neighborhoods. The organization works closely with municipal leaders, labor unions, and faith institutions to foster affirming and equitable environments for all residents. Staff members regularly speak at regional conferences, facilitate community dialogues on racial justice and health equity, publish educational resources for local community groups, and mentor youth organizers who are working to build inclusive local coalitions across the region.

Through its ongoing educational partnerships with local universities, healthcare providers, and civil rights coalitions, LGBT Detroit conducts valuable community-based research to identify emerging healthcare needs and social trends within African American LGBTQ+ populations. Community members, youth, and organizers seeking health services, peer support, or leadership training can visit the Detroit headquarters or submit an online inquiry. Supporters, volunteers, and corporate partners can get involved by joining event planning committees, mentoring young leaders, participating in civic action days, or providing tax-deductible donations to ensure life-affirming programs continue to thrive for future generations.
