Serves LGBTQ+ Michiganders statewide, with dedicated survivor services and public policy advocacyLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

Equality Michigan is Michigan's statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights advocacy and victim services organization, dedicated to achieving full equality, safety, and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals across the Great Lakes State. Tracing its history to 1991 with the founding of the Triangle Foundation, the organization has served for decades as the central voice for statewide policy reform, anti-violence advocacy, and legal protection.

A cornerstone of Equality Michigan's work is its Department of Victim Services, which provides comprehensive, trauma-informed assistance to individuals who have experienced hate crimes, bias incidents, domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, or unlawful discrimination. The agency's licensed advocates and case managers offer confidential crisis intervention, safety planning, legal navigation, healthcare coordination, and court accompaniment. Advocates work closely with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, civil rights commissions, and community partner organizations to ensure survivor rights are respected, trauma is addressed, and crimes are thoroughly documented.

Equality Michigan also leads extensive policy education and grassroots mobilization initiatives. The organization played a crucial historical role in successfully expanding Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to explicitly protect sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Equality Michigan continuously tracks state and local legislation, produces public policy reports, and organizes advocacy days at the State Capitol in Lansing to educate legislators on issues impacting queer and transgender residents across the state.

Beyond direct advocacy, Equality Michigan provides cultural competency training to schools, healthcare institutions, municipal agencies, and corporate workplaces to build affirming environments. These educational programs help institutional leaders understand the unique challenges facing LGBTQ+ individuals and implement policies that foster dignity, safety, and equity in public and private institutions throughout the state.

The organization also conducts statewide research on anti-LGBTQ+ bias incidents and hate violence, publishing periodic reports that inform policymakers, community advocates, and law enforcement agencies. By documenting the prevalence of hate crimes and institutional discrimination, Equality Michigan ensures that the lived realities of LGBTQ+ Michiganders are visible and addressed in public policy discussions and administrative reforms.

Through targeted voter education, nonpartisan civic engagement drives, and grassroots leadership development, the organization empowers community members across Michigan to make their voices heard in the democratic process. Staff and volunteers mobilize local coalitions from Detroit and Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo, Flint, and Traverse City, ensuring unified statewide action, grassroots empowerment, civic leadership, and regional responsiveness to emerging civil rights challenges.

The organization invites Michiganders to take action by reporting bias incidents, participating in community advocacy campaigns, attending educational workshops, and contributing financial support to advance statewide civil rights, public education, and survivor services. Through collective action and enduring advocacy, Equality Michigan continues to build a state where every person is treated with equal dignity and respect under the law.
