Jim Toy Community Center
Ann Arbor, MI · Serving Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County
The Jim Toy Community Center is a community-based organization that provides support, education, and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their allies across Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. Founded in 1995 as the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project and renamed in honor of historic Michigan civil rights pioneer Jim Toy, the center serves as a welcoming civic home in downtown Ann Arbor.
The center offers a broad spectrum of peer-led support and discussion groups for transgender adults, bisexual and pansexual individuals, queer people of color, and parents of LGBTQ+ youth. The facility houses the Terry Weymouth Community Library, an extensive collection of LGBTQ+ literature, historical archives, and educational texts available for community borrowing and research.
Throughout the year, the Jim Toy Community Center coordinates educational panels, cultural celebrations, and social mixers that connect students from nearby universities with local residents. The organization also collaborates with regional partners to organize Washtenaw Pride festivities and delivers cultural sensitivity trainings to regional businesses, civic organizations, and local government agencies.
Community members can check meeting schedules, borrow library materials, or visit during open center hours. Supporters can get involved by facilitating peer support groups, assisting with library cataloging, organizing Pride events, or contributing financial donations to support ongoing community programming.
