Transcend the Binary

Transcend the Binary is a peer-led nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the health, wellness, and self-determination of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals across Michigan. Founded in 2012 by transgender leaders and based in Ferndale, the organization provides compassionate peer navigation, clinical health education, and community-building programs tailored to the gender-diverse community.

The organization signature peer navigation program pairs clients with trained transgender and nonbinary navigators who assist with accessing gender-affirming medical care, hormone replacement therapy guidance, surgical consultations, and insurance pre-authorizations. Navigators also provide step-by-step assistance with legal name and gender marker changes on identity documents, vital records, and court petitions.

In addition to individual navigation, Transcend the Binary provides holistic wellness workshops, fitness and movement classes, peer support groups, and the annual Trans Camp retreat in partnership with regional outdoor centers. The organization also conducts research and delivers specialized cultural competency and clinical guidance trainings to medical providers, therapists, and hospital networks throughout the state.
