Community Spotlight

Columbia, MO · Serving Columbia, Boone County, and Mid-Missouri

Serves LGBTQIA+ individuals, youth, parents, and allies in Columbia, Boone County, and Mid-MissouriLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The Center Project is Mid-Missouri's only dedicated LGBTQIA+ community center, serving as a trusted community home, resource hub, and educational anchor for queer and gender-expansive people across Columbia, Boone County, and surrounding rural communities. Founded in 2004 by grassroots community organizers seeking a dedicated physical gathering space, the center has grown into a cornerstone regional institution that provides affirming environments, reduces social isolation, and delivers critical human services across central Missouri.

At the heart of the center's mission are its peer-led support groups, which offer safe, confidential spaces for individuals to explore identity, navigate social and medical transitions, and build lasting friendships. Youth programming is anchored by Prism, a social and support circle for middle and high school students that provides enriching activities, leadership development, and adult mentorship. For families, the Parents4Parents group connects caregivers of LGBTQIA+ young people, offering guidance on navigating school policies, healthcare systems, and family acceptance. Adult offerings include Gender Blender for transgender and nonbinary community members, along with social groups like the Rainbow Readers book club.

In addition to emotional and social support, The Center Project provides direct material aid to address economic and health disparities in the community. The center operates a free Community Closet featuring gender-affirming garments, professional clothing, and casual attire, allowing individuals in transition to build wardrobes in a dignified, supportive setting. The facility also houses a free basic needs pantry stocked with shelf-stable food and personal hygiene products, an emergency financial assistance fund for acute crises, and an extensive LGBTQIA+ lending library and community lounge.

Education and institutional advocacy form another essential pillar of the center's regional impact. Through its BRITE educational training initiative, The Center Project delivers tailored workshops and cultural competency consulting to healthcare clinics, mental health providers, social service agencies, school districts, and private employers. These educational sessions equip community institutions with practical tools to establish affirming policies, prevent discrimination, and improve care for gender-diverse clients and students.

The organization also hosts regular community social events, educational panels, open mic nights, and seasonal gatherings that foster intergenerational connection and queer visibility throughout central Missouri. By providing collaborative meeting space for local student groups, grassroots organizers, and civic allies, the center strengthens the regional safety net, provides volunteer leadership pathways, and empowers community members to lead positive change in their hometowns. These programs ensure that individuals living in rural and suburban communities surrounding Columbia have accessible, welcoming spaces to connect, access supplies, and organize supportive networks.

Through enduring partnerships with regional universities, civic organizations, and local healthcare providers, The Center Project continues to champion human dignity, foster community resilience, expand rural outreach, and create an inclusive Mid-Missouri where everyone belongs, feels valued, and can build a fulfilling life for future generations to come.
