QSpot LGBT Community Center

Asbury Park, NJ · Serving Jersey Shore, Monmouth County, and Ocean County

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, families, seniors, and allies along the Jersey Shore and throughout Monmouth and Ocean countiesLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

QSpot LGBT Community Center is the primary community center serving LGBTQ+ individuals, families, seniors, and allies along the Jersey Shore. Founded in 2005 under the corporate title Jersey Shore Community Center Project, the center was created by local advocates to establish a welcoming, non-commercial home for community connection. From its permanent building on Asbury Avenue in Asbury Park, the facility hosts dozens of support group meetings, artistic programs, and wellness workshops each month, creating an essential social lifeline for Monmouth and Ocean counties.

A foundational component of the center's mission is mental health and recovery support. The center provides an affirming setting for multiple weekly 12-step recovery groups addressing substance use, alcoholism, and behavioral health challenges in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. In collaboration with healthcare advocates, the organization facilitates peer-led cancer support groups designed for LGBTQ+ patients, survivors, and their caregivers. For unhoused or at-risk youth, the center coordinates outreach services, emergency supplies, personal care items, and mentoring connections that provide safety, life skills, and practical stability.

Seniors and older adults find vital connection through the Buddy Program for Older LGBT Adults, an intergenerational outreach initiative that connects isolated elders with compassionate community volunteers for weekly home visits, friendly check-in calls, transportation assistance, and social outings. The Early Bird Social Club and monthly daytime gatherings provide older community members with accessible spaces for recreation, intellectual discussion, and mutual encouragement, helping to alleviate social isolation among LGBTQ+ elders living along the Jersey Shore.

Cultural programming enriches community visibility and pride throughout the region. The center sponsors the QSpot Marching Band and Concert Band, an open-membership musical ensemble that performs in regional Pride parades, civic festivals, and seasonal concerts. The annual QFest LGBTQ Film and Digital Media Festival brings independent filmmakers, feature screenings, and panel discussions to the Jersey Shore, highlighting diverse queer stories from around the globe and providing a creative platform for regional artists to share their cinematic work with welcoming audiences.

In addition to the arts, the center hosts educational workshops on sexual violence prevention, healthy relationships, and physical well-being, including guided meditation and gentle yoga classes taught by certified community instructors. The center also provides fiscal sponsorship and technical assistance to emerging grassroots initiatives, fostering community-led organizing across central New Jersey. Community members gather at the center for social groups, including monthly book discussions, cinema screenings, game nights, and open social hours that allow neighbors to form enduring friendships.

Annual celebratory fundraisers such as community barbecues and bingo evenings bring residents together to support the facility and sustain its ongoing operations. The community center also serves as a vital meeting space for grassroots civic associations, student groups, and regional advocacy partners, reinforcing community solidarity and collective resilience across coastal New Jersey.
