The Pride Center of New Jersey
Highland Park, NJ · Serving Central New Jersey and surrounding areas
The Pride Center of New Jersey serves as an essential grassroots gathering place and comprehensive support hub for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their families throughout Central New Jersey and neighboring regions. Established in 1994 to provide a permanent, welcoming physical home for the local LGBTQ+ community, the organization is operated entirely through the dedication of passionate community volunteers committed to fostering connection, safety, dignity, and mutual encouragement across all generations.
At the heart of the center's work is an expansive calendar of nearly 40 peer-facilitated discussion and support groups meeting on a regular schedule throughout the month. These volunteer-run gatherings cater to a wide range of sexual orientations, gender identities, and life stages. Offerings include dedicated support circles for gay men, lesbian women, bisexual individuals, transgender and nonbinary people, and older adults navigating late-in-life coming out experiences. Specialized affinity groups such as Oasis provide a welcoming dialogue and social space for queer and transgender people of color, while creative affinity groups focus on writing, visual arts, roleplaying games, and mental health discussions in partnership with community health networks. Each group offers a respectful, confidential setting where participants can freely explore their identities, celebrate personal milestones, and share life journeys in an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance and peer empathy.
Youth empowerment has long been a core priority for the organization. Since 2003, the center has operated its signature Youth Drop-In program, providing young people ages 17 and younger with a safe and affirming environment to build lasting friendships, explore identity, and receive guidance from supportive adult mentors. In addition to regular drop-in sessions filled with games, crafts, and discussions, the youth department coordinates educational workshops, social outings, and supportive resources for parents of queer youth to foster strong family understanding and acceptance at home.
Beyond support groups, the center's physical facility in Highland Park functions as an active community center and gathering space. The facility features an extensive LGBTQ+ lending library holding hundreds of fiction, non-fiction, historical, and health titles that are freely accessible to community members. The organization also hosts regular community events such as open mic nights, social mixers, holiday potlucks, film screenings, and educational workshops addressing legal and social issues affecting LGBTQ+ New Jerseyans.
The organization also represents the local LGBTQ+ community in broader regional civic life, organizing festival contingents, educational outreach tables, and parade floats at statewide Pride celebrations. Because the center is completely volunteer-run, community participation remains fundamental to its ongoing vitality and success. Community members can get involved by volunteering as front desk greeters, training to facilitate peer support groups, serving on leadership committees, assisting with event coordination, or contributing tax-deductible financial donations that sustain facility operations and community programs for generations to come.
