Urban League of Essex County
Community SpotlightNewark, NJ · Serving Essex County and the Greater Newark Area
The Urban League of Essex County is one of the most storied and impactful civil rights and community development organizations in New Jersey. Established in 1917 as the Negro Welfare League of New Jersey by pioneering social worker William Ashby, the affiliate was organized to assist Black families arriving during the Great Migration with employment, housing, and social integration. Over more than a century of continuous service, the agency has grown into a comprehensive community development corporation dedicated to advancing economic self-reliance, educational excellence, and racial equity throughout Newark and Essex County.
At the core of the League’s economic initiatives is its Financial Opportunity Center, an integrated service model that bundles workforce development, one-on-one financial coaching, and access to public benefits. Job seekers receive comprehensive career readiness training, resume refinement, interview coaching, and placement into high-growth industry sectors across northern New Jersey. Concurrently, certified financial counselors work with clients to improve credit scores, establish personal savings, eliminate debt, and build sustainable household budgets. The agency also administers the Urban Seniors Jobs Program, providing paid community service training, digital literacy development, and employment placement for older workers seeking to remain active in the workforce, build financial stability, and maintain independence.
The organization places a strong emphasis on educational excellence and youth development. The Urban League Early Childhood Education Center operates state-licensed preschool classrooms designed to prepare children for elementary school success through structured literacy, mathematics, and social-emotional development curricula. For older youth, the agency offers after-school academic tutoring, leadership development, STEM workshops, and college application assistance to inspire the next generation of professionals. These multi-tiered educational offerings support working families, nurture curiosity, and provide children with strong academic foundations for lifelong achievement in school and beyond.
Housing stability and neighborhood revitalization represent vital pillars of the League’s work. As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, the organization provides pre-purchase education for first-time homebuyers, foreclosure prevention counseling, tenant rights education, and rental assistance navigation. Furthermore, the agency operates the ULEC Tech House, providing community residents with high-speed digital access, computer literacy classes, and technology workforce skills that bridge the digital divide in urban neighborhoods while preparing residents for 21st-century careers and technological self-reliance.
To address immediate community needs, the League maintains a vital food pantry providing nutritious groceries, fresh produce, and emergency household supplies to food-insecure families throughout Newark. Comprehensive support services ensure that community members have the essential resources required to achieve lasting independence, personal well-being, and family stability. Community members can access services by contacting the Central Avenue facility in Newark, and supporters can advance the mission by volunteering with the Urban League Guild, providing mentorship, or contributing philanthropic support to foster enduring community prosperity, equity, and economic mobility throughout Essex County.
