Albuquerque, NM · Serving State of New Mexico

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities throughout the state of New MexicoLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

Equality New Mexico is the flagship statewide civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to securing full equality, dignity, and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer New Mexicans and their families. Founded in 1993 by community activists determined to establish a permanent, professional institutional voice for LGBTQ+ rights, the organization has spent more than three decades building a powerful grassroots coalition that spans urban centers, rural towns, and sovereign Indigenous nations across the Land of Enchantment.

The organization's legislative and policy initiatives have fundamentally shaped New Mexico's civil rights landscape. Operating at the state capitol in Santa Fe and within municipal councils throughout the state, Equality New Mexico led successful historic campaigns to pass comprehensive statewide nondiscrimination protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, employment, and public accommodations. The organization has also played a central leadership role in securing marriage equality, protecting reproductive freedom, safeguarding access to gender-affirming healthcare, banning harmful conversion practices for minors, eliminating the discriminatory gay and trans panic legal defense, and modernizing state vital records systems to allow accurate, affirming gender markers on identity documents.

Grassroots community organizing and rural capacity building are core pillars of the agency's statewide mission. Recognizing that LGBTQ+ individuals living outside major metropolitan centers often face severe geographic isolation, social stigma, and limited service infrastructure, Equality New Mexico invests deeply in rural outreach. Staff organizers collaborate with local community leaders, educators, healthcare providers, and grassroots volunteers from the Four Corners region and the Navajo Nation to the southern border to establish inclusive regional networks, deliver cultural humility and anti-bias trainings, and advance affirming municipal policies in small towns and unincorporated communities.

Education, civic engagement, and leadership development are fostered through signature statewide initiatives. The organization convenes the annual LGBTQ+ Statewide Summit and youth leadership symposiums, bringing together hundreds of community members, youth advocates, elders, healthcare professionals, educators, and civic leaders for strategic policy discussions, wellness workshops, and community organizing sessions. The agency also administers intensive legislative fellowships and youth organizing programs that equip emerging advocates with the tools, policy knowledge, and media skills necessary to champion social justice in their own local communities and regional coalitions.

In addition to policy advocacy, the organization coordinates celebratory cultural events such as the annual Out and Proud 5K Run and Walk, bringing together diverse communities across the state in visible solidarity, health, and joy. Community members can access advocacy resources, educational toolkits, and civic action alerts through the organization website or Albuquerque headquarters. Direct community organizing ensures that LGBTQ+ New Mexicans in every corner of the state have access to supportive networks and civic power. Supporters can advance the fight for equality by volunteering on grassroots campaign teams, participating in legislative lobby days, or providing charitable contributions to the Equality New Mexico Foundation.
