Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM · Serving New Mexico

Serves Transgender, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals and their families throughout New MexicoLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico is the premier statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to serving transgender, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals and their families across the Land of Enchantment. Established in 2008 by community leaders recognizing an urgent need for dedicated trans-specific resources and safe gathering spaces, the agency has grown from a grassroots peer support circle into a comprehensive statewide service center that provides emergency assistance, clinical navigation, transitional housing, and education for thousands of individuals each year.

The organization’s Albuquerque drop-in facility on 4th Street NW serves as a safe and accessible anchor for daily living assistance, respite, and crisis stabilization. Open weekly for walk-in community members, the center provides crucial basic needs amenities including private shower facilities, laundry machines, a hot meal kitchen, emergency food pantry boxes, personal hygiene products, safer sex supplies, and an expansive gender-affirming clothing closet. The facility also offers public computer terminals, device charging stations, mail distribution services, and quiet community lounge spaces where participants can study, rest, access essential online services, and socialize in an affirming and welcoming environment.

Comprehensive healthcare navigation and harm reduction are fundamental components of the center's programming. The agency offers free, confidential rapid HIV and hepatitis C testing, overdose prevention training with naloxone distribution, and a full syringe services exchange program. Licensed mental health therapists and bodyworkers volunteer their professional time to provide on-site counseling and stress reduction services. Furthermore, staff maintain an updated statewide network of trans-competent medical providers, helping participants navigate hormone replacement therapy, gender-affirming surgical consultations, and insurance pre-authorizations without experiencing stigma, discrimination, or administrative delays in receiving necessary medical care.

To address critical disparities in housing and legal identity, the organization operates Casa Lola, a specialized transitional housing program in Albuquerque. Casa Lola provides stable, supportive housing and individualized case management for transgender and gender-nonconforming adults working toward long-term independence, career development, educational attainment, and permanent housing stability. Additionally, the agency’s legal navigation specialists provide direct financial subsidies, legal guidance, and paperwork assistance to help individuals update their names and gender markers on state driver's licenses, birth certificates, Social Security records, and federal passports.

The agency also fosters community resilience through an extensive schedule of peer support groups, including specialized circles for youth, parents and caregivers, transgender men, transgender women, nonbinary individuals, and Black and Brown gender-diverse people. Staff members frequently deliver cultural competency trainings and technical assistance to hospital networks, university systems, school districts, and corporate employers statewide. Individuals can access direct assistance by visiting the Albuquerque drop-in center during open hours or submitting an inquiry online. Community allies can support the organization’s life-saving mission by volunteering as desk hosts, participating in seasonal supply drives, or making philanthropic contributions to sustain vital trans resources across New Mexico.
