Oklahomans for Equality
Tulsa, OK · Serving Northeastern Oklahoma
Oklahomans for Equality stands as the flagship civil rights, social service, and community organization for Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and families across Northeastern Oklahoma. Founded in 1980, the nonprofit has spent more than four decades championing human rights, providing vital health resources, preserving local history, and building regional community solidarity. The organization owns and operates the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center on East Fourth Street in downtown Tulsa, widely celebrated as one of the largest and most comprehensive LGBTQ+ community facilities in the United States, providing a welcoming gathering space for thousands of community members annually.
The Dennis R. Neill Equality Center functions as a vibrant six-day-a-week community home and regional civic anchor. The multi-story facility features an extensive LGBTQ+ lending library containing thousands of titles, dedicated community archives documenting regional queer history, and a public art gallery that showcases works by local and regional artists. The center also provides multipurpose meeting spaces, conference suites, a large modern event center, and welcoming lounge spaces where residents of all generations can gather for social connection, study, community organizing, civic fellowship, and public celebrations.
Community health and wellness represent central pillars of the organization's daily operations. An on-site wellness clinic delivers free, rapid, and confidential HIV testing, sexually transmitted infection screenings, and preventive education in a welcoming, stigma-free environment. The center also coordinates affordable professional mental health counseling services, connecting individuals, couples, and families with licensed, affirming therapists who specialize in identity exploration, relationship support, and trauma recovery. Specialized case managers also help clients navigate local social services, emergency housing resources, legal name change paperwork, and affirming healthcare providers across the state, ensuring holistic care for every individual.
Peer support and community connection thrive through dozens of volunteer-led groups that meet regularly at the center. Tailored circles support transgender and nonbinary adults, youth and young adults, elder LGBTQ+ community members, and parents of queer children. The center also hosts recovery meetings, recreational clubs, book circles, musical performances, and game nights, ensuring that individuals from every walk of life find belonging, validation, and compassionate companionship in an affirming environment.
In addition to year-round facility operations, Oklahomans for Equality coordinates Tulsa Pride, the longest continuously running LGBTQ+ pride festival and parade in Oklahoma. The multi-day celebration draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Tulsa Arts District each year for vibrant parades, live entertainment, and community networking. The organization also manages the Equality Business Alliance, connecting consumers with affirming regional enterprises, and leads civic advocacy efforts at local and state levels. Supported by generous donors, corporate partners, civic leaders, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, Oklahomans for Equality continues to create a welcoming, equitable Oklahoma for all. Through these extensive community services and cultural traditions, the center remains a welcoming home, vibrant resource hub, and powerful voice for equality across the state.
