The Arc Jackson County
Medford, OR · Serving Jackson County
The Arc Jackson County advocates for the civil rights, personal dignity, and full community inclusion of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Southern Oregon. Founded in 1959 by local parents who banded together to create community alternatives to institutional care, the grassroots chapter has supported generations of families across Jackson County. Today, the organization focuses on helping people with developmental disabilities live independently, access essential healthcare, and participate meaningfully in community life.
Direct support services help individuals and family members navigate complex county and state service networks. Staff assist with intake for qualified direct support professionals, guide parents through educational individual support plans, and coordinate access to public benefits. To improve emergency safety, the chapter distributes personalized CommCards, which communicate vital medical information and de-escalation strategies to first responders and healthcare personnel during times of crisis. The Ken Wonderly Emergency Fund provides flexible relief for essential living costs, while community inclusion scholarships remove economic barriers to participating in local classes, sports, and cultural programs.
Social connection and self-advocacy lie at the core of the chapter's mission to combat isolation and foster belonging. The organization convenes monthly community events, dances, and seasonal gatherings that bring participants together in welcoming environments. Through Jackson County Self Advocates, individuals develop civic leadership skills, organize outreach projects, and learn to speak up for their rights before local public officials.
