The Arc of Indiana County
Indiana, PA · Serving Indiana County and surrounding rural Western Pennsylvania communities
The Arc of Indiana County champions the rights, community inclusion, and self-determination of individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays throughout Indiana County and surrounding rural Western Pennsylvania communities. Established in 1973 as a non-profit parent association, the organization collaborates with families, schools, and healthcare agencies to eliminate societal barriers and secure individualized opportunities across all life stages.
A central priority of the chapter is individual and educational advocacy for school-age students and their families. The organization's educational advocacy coordinators provide free guidance to parents navigating complex special education systems. Coordinators assist caregivers in understanding evaluation reports, developing individualized education programs, and preparing for school district conferences, ensuring students receive the necessary classroom accommodations and assistive technologies to succeed. The chapter also participates in the Local Task Force, convening parents and educators to resolve systemic educational issues and improve regional special education delivery.
Beyond childhood advocacy, the chapter delivers vital adult resources, community quality oversight, and public education. The organization coordinates the Independent Monitoring for Quality program, conducting independent evaluations of state-funded disability services to ensure participants experience dignity, safety, and personal satisfaction. The agency also awards annual transition scholarships, organizes free community dental clinics and nutrition classes, and conducts voter registration drives that empower individuals with disabilities to make their voices heard across Indiana County.
