The Arc of Gillespie County
Fredericksburg, TX · Serving Gillespie County and the Texas Hill Country
The Arc of Gillespie County, operating as New Horizons, provides comprehensive day habilitation, vocational development, and community support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Fredericksburg. Organized in 1982 by local parents and civic leaders, the organization was created to overcome the lack of specialized adult services in rural Central Texas. Operating from a mortgage-free facility on Industrial Loop completed in 2004, the center offers an empowering daytime environment where participants gain vocational skills, build friendships, and achieve greater personal independence.
In partnership with Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers, New Horizons delivers individualized care that balances vocational training with social enrichment. Clients participate in functional academics, life coaching, culinary training, and creative arts. The center also provides supported employment and job coaching, connecting clients with local businesses to secure meaningful community employment. Recreational group outings and structured social activities encourage civic integration and foster confidence among participants.
Families and caregivers seeking daytime placement or vocational services can visit or call the center to discuss eligibility and enrollment options. The nonprofit relies on community support to maintain operations, welcoming volunteer assistance and contributions during its annual radiothon broadcast in partnership with local radio station KNAF. Donations may also be sent directly by mail or through the organization's website.
