The Grove Juicery + Wellness Cafe

Omaha, NE

The Grove Juicery + Wellness Cafe is a women-owned, plant-based juicery and wellness cafe serving Omaha from three shops: the downtown flagship on Farnam Street, Grove West in Elkhorn, and the Aksarben location inside Inner Rail Food Hall. Founder Meghann Schense started The Grove after years as an international fashion consultant, when cold-pressed juice and clean, local food became her way of staying well on the road. Everything is made fresh daily in Omaha. The menu runs from cold-pressed juices and plant mylks to smoothies, protein shakes, wellness shots, acai bowls, toasts, salads, and gluten-free baked goods, alongside a wellness market stocked with superfoods, proteins, vitamins, and adaptogens. Multi-day juice cleanses and a subscription Juice Club with free delivery round out the lineup for regulars who want the routine handled for them. Ingredients are the whole point here. The Grove sources organic, locally grown produce and clean, tested superfoods and adaptogens, and leaves out additives, preservatives, stabilizers, gums, and added sugar. The shop also runs as a zero-waste production facility and cafe, with an in-store recycling program, glass bottles on a returnable recycling program, and juice pulp composted back into local soil. Ownership note: The Grove Juicery + Wellness Cafe is listed as women-owned based on founder Meghann Schense's own account on the company website, where she writes that she is "the creator and owner of The Grove." This is self-identified by the business and has not yet been owner-confirmed through Inclusivity.org.

Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors

Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors

Omaha, NE

Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors is a soda fountain for grown ups, down in Lil' Bohemia on South 13th Street in Omaha. Boozy treats and fine eats, served late into the night, with big bold twists on the classics of yesteryear. It is 21 and over at all times, so please leave the kids at home. There is a rotary phone on the wall at every booth. Lift it, press the button, and a bartender picks up; the drinks, the food and the tab all come to the table, so nobody has to hold a spot at the bar to get a round in. Around the phones sit tufted orange booths, a jukebox that still takes a coin, and enough color to make it clear the room has been having a good time since long before anyone walked in. The drinks are the point. Tried and true pours come off the tap, including the Lil' Dizzy on cucumber infused gin with a seasonal shrub and a paloma built on grapefruit cream soda. The Originals go further out: April Hearted with acid adjusted guanabana and strawberry foam, the Pollywog on cedar infused bourbon and tart cherry, the Trash Panda Xpress with house lemongrass vodka and wonton strips on top. Ice cream cocktails and floats are made with Coneflower Creamery vanilla, from the Pink Squirrel to Day Drunk in Little Italy, which took the 2019 negroni throwdown. The slushees are engineered for brain freeze on purpose. Nobody drinking is left out either, with the Phony Negroni and house sodas in cola, sarsaparilla, cherry, vanilla cola and ginger, plus mocktails on request. The kitchen means it. A cheeseburger on a certified Piedmontese patty with fancy sauce, a fried okra po'boy, The Rooster with fried chicken thighs and rooster sauce on brioche, fried bologna piled with chow chow and hot mustard on texas toast, and a Lil' Bucket o' Chicken worth the twenty minute wait. Vegan and gluten friendly plates are marked all the way down the list, with a Beyond patty, a Thai veggie sando, brussel sprouts and fries to match. Happy hour runs 5 to 7 every damn day. Thursday is steak night, $23 for steak and two sides. Saturday and Sunday there is Hangover Brunch from 11am to 3pm. And if it is a birthday, prove it and the cake is free with any purchase. Parties of six or more can reserve by email, and the room is available for private events. Fizzy's Fountain & Liquors is included in Omaha Places' published guide to LGBTQ+ friendly businesses in Omaha.

ELEVEN//Three

ELEVEN//Three

Omaha, NE

ELEVEN//Three is a home fragrance company in Omaha, hand-poured by Brant and Doug Treadway. It started at home, in a house known for having a candle going in every room when guests came by, and sometimes two completely different candles in the bigger rooms just to change the feel of the space. The name is theirs twice over: eleven is Doug's favorite number and his birth month, and three is the day they got married. It turned into a business after a conversation with a local clinic about family planning, and what it costs to have a child as a same sex couple. That is what gave a passion project a mission and something to work toward. Everything is made by hand in small batches and every scent is blended in house. The wax is 100 percent soy, so it burns slower and cleaner, and the wicks are lead free. There are no preservatives and no dyes, and every drop of fragrance is free of carcinogens, reproductive toxins and the other chemicals that hide inside the word fragrance. Clean should never cost you quality. There is a product for every part of the day. Classic and XL wax melts, dough bowl candles, car diffusers, room sprays and foaming hand soaps, in signature scents and in collections that move through the seasons, the zodiac, and a cereal bowl lineup that smells the way you are hoping it does. The shop on South 89th Street is open six days a week and orders ship anywhere in the country. Custom labeling turns any scent into a wedding favor, a client gift or a party thank-you, and wholesale partners carry the line in their own shops.

Countryside Community Church

Omaha, NE

Countryside Community Church is an inclusive, open and affirming family of faith on the Tri-Faith Commons in west Omaha, welcoming all to God's table of love and acceptance. The congregation gathered in 1949, as young families settled the once rural farmland of the Loveland area after the war, and became a United Church of Christ congregation when the Congregational and Christian churches merged with the Evangelical and Reformed churches in 1957. Its members come from many different faith backgrounds, diverse yet united by Christ's example. As an Open and Affirming congregation in the United Church of Christ, Countryside has made a public covenant of welcome to persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions into the full life and ministry of the church. Its Accessible to All covenant makes the same promise to people with disabilities, visible and invisible, and to their families, whose dignity and talents belong in every part of church life. Its antiracism covenant commits the congregation to understand, identify and dismantle racism, in the world and in itself. You are loved beyond your wildest imagination. In 2015 the congregation voted to become the Christian partner of the Tri-Faith Initiative, a first of its kind union of Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities following their separate spiritual journeys together on one campus, and in 2019 Countryside held its first service in its new building on the Tri-Faith Commons alongside Temple Israel and the American Muslim Institute. Tri-Faith programs and events are open to the whole community, and no one needs to belong to any of the three faith communities to take part. Worship is Sunday mornings at ten, in person and streamed live, with communion offered at the table on the first and third Sundays. Music runs all the way through the life of the church: the C4 adult choir, a handbell choir, children's and youth choirs, an organist in residence, a concert series and a sanctuary built to carry all of it. The Community Cupboard has been feeding neighbors every month since 2010 and opens drive through on the first Saturday, to anyone in Omaha and the surrounding communities, with fresh produce from the Tri-Faith gardens through the summer and fall. Around it are children's and youth ministries, Kindernook Preschool, adult education through the Center for Faith Studies, the Village small groups, pastoral care and spiritual direction, refugee support, and a standing commitment to the environment. The best way to meet Countryside is the ten o'clock service on a Sunday morning. Afterward the Welcome Center is where to find someone who can answer questions, hand you a newsletter and introduce you to the people who make this place what it is.

Nathaniel Jensen Photography

Omaha, NE

Nathaniel Jensen Photography works from one simple idea: whatever the occasion, an image captured is a moment treasured. Nate is a full time photographer, born and raised in Omaha, and he has been photographing weddings and portrait sessions since 2017. He lives in Omaha and will travel anywhere his camera takes him. The work spans weddings, engagements and couples, proposals, families and extended families, maternity, newborns, first birthday milestones, senior portraits, headshots and editorial portraits, and branding, team and event photography for businesses. Choosing a wedding photographer is a unique opportunity, because the photos are one of the very few permanent things left from the day. Once the last song fades at the reception, the decorations are packed in the car and the flowers wilt, the images are what remain. Everyone has an important story to tell, and the way to tell it is by keeping it real: true to life colors, true to the emotions of the day, and true to who you are. That starts with making people comfortable. Nate fell in love with photography because of the connection it creates between the person in front of the camera and the photographer behind it, and he sets out to make everyone feel completely at ease and absolutely authentic, usually while making them laugh. The promise is timeless, artful images you can look at any time and with any person and be transported back to that exact moment, preserved not only for you but for your children and grandchildren. Wedding coverage runs eight hours or more and includes a complimentary engagement session, all planning and coordination time, a personal online gallery, and digital downloads with printing rights. Portrait sessions come with edited high resolution images, a personal online gallery, and the same download and printing rights, with extra time, locations and outfits available. Booking is transparent and hassle free, and hourly rates are available on request. Nathaniel Jensen Photography is a people first business with a commitment to celebrating inclusivity and diversity. Its work has been featured in Dancing With Her.
