Bakeries in San Antonio

Bakeries and dessert makers around San Antonio, including vegan and allergy-friendly bakers who run that as their whole business rather than as a side counter. Thrive Youth Center

San Antonio, TX

Thrive Youth Center is a San Antonio nonprofit with one mission, stated in a sentence: to provide LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness with a safe and supportive environment to facilitate their empowerment toward transforming their lives. The vision behind it is an equitable community where all LGBTQ+ young adults can flourish, and the phrase on the front of the building is simpler still. All are welcome here. The organization is direct about why it exists. By its own account, 4.2 million young people in the United States experience homelessness each year, and LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to be among them because of family conflict, rejection, aging out of foster care and poverty. Young people who reach Thrive have the same needs as any other youth without a home, and some that are specific to them: safe and secure housing, identity-related counseling, access to legal support, help with a name or gender marker change, transgender-specific healthcare, and support through transition care. The emergency shelter sits on the campus of Haven for Hope and houses 10 young adults for up to six months. Food and a bed are the floor, not the service: each resident works to an individually tailored, youth-directed case management plan aimed at actually exiting homelessness, with linkage to identification recovery, counseling, medical services, gender-affirming care, educational opportunities and vocational training. The focus is on removing the barriers a young adult hits when they try to get help, and then on the next move toward their own goals. The housing program is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and places 45 young adults a year in apartments of their own choosing across San Antonio. A Continuum of Care grant from 2017 covers 20 of them annually, and the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program, which the organization joined in 2020, adds 25 more for up to two years. Everyone in the program is partnered with a case manager to build a plan, and with a life skills program manager for the ordinary machinery of living alone: budgeting, grocery shopping and cooking, laundry and cleaning, maintaining healthy relationships, and staying mindful of physical and emotional wellness. Street outreach reaches young adults who have not come through a door yet. Around the two housing programs sit case management, benefits assistance, counseling, career counseling and guidance, life skills assistance, education support and mental health referrals. The phone line answers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thrive was established as a 501(c)(3) in February 2015 by its founder, Sandra Whitley, who went looking for a shelter for homeless LGBTQ+ young people in Texas, found that there were none, visited the Ali Forney Center in New York City, and came home to build one. Justin R. Holley has been executive director since July 2024, after joining as fundraising manager in 2022; he co-chairs the Alliance to House Everyone and serves on the boards of Close to Home, the Non-Profit Council of San Antonio and the Diversity Recovery Alliance. The organization holds a Candid Gold Seal of Transparency. Six values are named and each one is written out at length on the organization's own site: teamwork, honesty, responsibility, integrity, a visionary approach, and equity. The last of those is the one that reads least like a poster. Empathy and equity guide our interactions, it says, approaching each LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness with compassion and understanding, providing personalized care that respects individual identities while actively working to address systemic barriers.
