Communitas provides individualized, family-centered human services and community integration opportunities for children, teens, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Greater Boston and Middlesex County. Founded in 1954 as the East Middlesex Association for Retarded Citizens (EMARC) and headquartered in Wakefield, the nonprofit agency embraces a philosophy of universal equality, personal autonomy, and lifelong inclusion across all life stages.

Day service programs deliver structured life skills instruction, expressive arts, fitness activities, and supported employment opportunities. Vocational specialists partner with regional businesses to offer career assessments, job training, and on-site coaching that enables participants to secure competitive employment in community settings. The agency also operates more than a dozen residential homes throughout local neighborhoods, offering around-the-clock nursing care, personal assistance, and supportive environments tailored to individual choices.

Recreation and youth initiatives include the Upward Program for young adults, after-school social clubs, weekend community outings, and inclusive summer enrichment that cultivate lasting friendships and community belonging. In addition, the Communitas Family Resource Center provides essential support services, including caregiver respite, educational advocacy, and parent workshops for families navigating disability systems. Individuals and families can reach out by phone or online, while community members can support programs through volunteer engagement and charitable giving to advance inclusion.
