OutCenter of Southwest Michigan

Benton Harbor, MI · Serving Southwest Michigan

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, youth, families, and allies in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties in Southwest MichiganLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The OutCenter of Southwest Michigan works to provide vital support, advocacy, and educational resources for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their families throughout Southwest Michigan. Established in 2003 and located in downtown Benton Harbor, the center serves as a welcoming community anchor across Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.

The center offers a diverse array of peer-led support groups, social mixers, and wellness programs designed for LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and parents of gender-expansive children. Its youth drop-in space provides middle and high school students with a safe, affirming environment to study, socialize, connect with trained adult mentors, and participate in creative arts and leadership activities.

In addition to direct community support, the OutCenter collaborates with regional school districts to establish and support Gay-Straight Alliances, deliver anti-bullying trainings, and advocate for inclusive educational policies. The organization also partners with local healthcare systems, law enforcement agencies, and community businesses to conduct cultural competency workshops and promote regional inclusion.

Community members and youth seeking support groups, resources, or meeting space can drop in during open hours or connect online. Advocates and allies can get involved by volunteering at the center, facilitating discussion groups, participating in annual fundraising events, or making tax-deductible contributions to support rural and small-town LGBTQ+ programming.
