Serves LGBTQ+ and 2SLGBTQIA+ Minnesotans, youth, educators, crime survivors, and families statewideLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

OutFront Minnesota is the state's largest civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing equality, freedom, and full self-expression for 2SLGBTQIA+ Minnesotans. Founded in 1987 as the Gay and Lesbian Community Action Council, the organization has spent decades championing progressive policy change, educating public institutions, and providing critical direct services. Through coordinated grassroots organizing, coalition building, and legislative engagement, OutFront Minnesota ensures that queer and trans individuals across urban centers, suburban neighborhoods, and rural towns are protected under the law and respected in their daily lives.

A primary pillar of the organization's work is its Anti-Violence Program, which responds to more than 1,000 incidents of bias-motivated violence, relationship abuse, sexual assault, and harassment each year. Trained advocates staff confidential helplines, provide immediate crisis counseling, assist with safety planning, accompany survivors to court hearings, and connect individuals with LGBTQ-affirming attorneys. The department also administers emergency relief funds that provide direct financial assistance to vulnerable community members facing displacement, violence, or systemic discrimination, helping them secure temporary lodging, emergency transportation, legal counsel, and basic essentials during acute personal crises.

Through its Educational Equity Department, OutFront Minnesota works directly with K-12 school districts, university teacher preparation programs, educators, and community groups to cultivate safe, welcoming learning environments. The team delivers professional development workshops for teachers and school administrators, establishes anti-bullying guidelines, and provides ongoing technical assistance to school boards. The department also empowers youth organizers by supporting student-led Gender and Sexuality Alliances and hosting the annual statewide Youth Summit, where hundreds of young leaders gather for leadership training, community building, and creative expression.

In addition to classroom education and crisis services, OutFront Minnesota operates specialized community initiatives including the Safe Harbor Program, which supports sexually exploited and at-risk youth with trauma-informed case management, shelter navigation, and ongoing life skills support. The organization also provides tailored assistance for individuals and families relocating to Minnesota from politically hostile environments, connecting newcomers with housing leads, affirming healthcare networks, legal guidance, community mentorship, and welcoming local civic groups across the state.

OutFront Minnesota actively shapes public policy by educating state lawmakers, drafting non-discrimination legislation, tracking bills, and coordinating statewide coalition campaigns with diverse community partners. The organization organizes large-scale lobby days at the Minnesota State Capitol, equips voters with comprehensive civic education toolkits, and trains grassroots community leaders through specialized advocacy fellowships. Through strategic community education, public campaigns, and broad coalition building, the organization fosters deep, lasting public understanding and enduring community support of queer and trans issues. From passing statewide non-discrimination statutes and student protection acts to defending gender-affirming healthcare access, outlawing conversion practices, and expanding civil protections, OutFront Minnesota remains a cornerstone of civic advocacy, grassroots power, and human rights leadership across the entire Upper Midwest region for future generations.
