POC Pride Minnesota

Minneapolis, MN · Serving Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro and Minnesota statewide

Serves BIPOC LGBTQ+ individuals, youth ages 14 to 24, families, and community members across MinnesotaLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

POC Pride Minnesota, formally registered as Minnesota People of Color LGBTQ Pride, is a cornerstone community institution dedicated to uplifting, celebrating, and empowering LGBTQ+ Black, Indigenous, and People of Color across the Upper Midwest. Established in 1999, the organization was founded to ensure that queer people of color have dedicated cultural spaces, leadership pathways, and supportive networks that honor their intersecting identities. Operating from its Community Hub at the historic Sabathani Community Center in South Minneapolis, POC Pride Minnesota provides a welcoming environment where community members access affirming resources, build social connections, and engage in cultural expression.

The organization is best known for organizing the annual Minnesota POC Pride Festival, which draws thousands of attendees for a vibrant multiday celebration of BIPOC LGBTQ+ heritage. The festival showcases local musicians, dancers, poets, and visual artists while hosting local black and brown vendors, community craftspeople, and civic organizations. Crucially, the celebration integrates public health and wellness components, offering on-site wellness screenings, mental health resources, and navigation services for housing and social benefits in a festive, culturally affirming atmosphere that welcomes families, elders, and allies alike.

Beyond its signature festival, POC Pride Minnesota delivers comprehensive year-round programming focused on economic mobility and youth empowerment. The organization's Workforce Readiness Program supports young people ages 14 to 24 through an intensive multi-week curriculum covering resume writing, interview preparation, financial literacy, and professional networking. Participants receive one-on-one mentorship from experienced community professionals, helping them build self-confidence, develop marketable job skills, explore vocational pathways, and transition successfully into sustainable careers and higher educational opportunities.

Public health equity is another essential focus for the organization. POC Pride Minnesota hosts regular community conversation circles addressing mental wellness, grief, and health navigation in culturally responsive settings. The organization partners with state and local health agencies to deliver tobacco cessation programs through the Quit Partner initiative, distributing wellness education, holistic lifestyle counseling, and harm reduction resources directly to underserved populations across the Twin Cities metro area.

In addition to health and workforce programs, the organization coordinates broad mutual aid and community-building initiatives throughout the year. POC Pride Minnesota organizes seasonal holiday toy drives, food distributions, and family gatherings like trunk-or-treat events that foster intergenerational solidarity and support local families. The organization also hosts educational panels, community forums, storytelling circles, and creative arts showcases that celebrate queer cultural heritage and artistic expression. By providing direct aid, cultural affirmation, and essential social connections, these gatherings create a vital safety net for families and youth across Hennepin, Ramsey, and neighboring counties throughout Minnesota for generations to come.

Through cultural celebration, workforce training, health advocacy, community education, and grassroots mutual aid, POC Pride Minnesota advances systemic equity, creates enduring community resilience, and nurtures thriving, connected neighborhoods across Minnesota.
