Urban League Twin Cities is a historic civil rights, community action, and economic development institution dedicated to advancing systemic equity, economic opportunity, and community self-reliance for African descendants and underserved families throughout the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. Established in 1926 and rooted in North Minneapolis at the Glover Sudduth Center on Plymouth Avenue, the organization has spent nearly a century advocating for racial equality, expanding economic opportunities, and dismantling systemic barriers to wealth creation and educational attainment.

A central focus of the organization is its Workforce Solutions department, which equips adult jobseekers with the skills and credentials required for high-growth, livable-wage careers. The program provides individualized career coaching, resume preparation, digital literacy training, and direct placement partnerships with regional employers. In addition, the organization coordinates specialized pathways into construction trades, union apprenticeships, commercial transportation, and healthcare careers, ensuring that community members can access stable, wealth-building employment opportunities with comprehensive benefits and advancement potential.

Through its Wealth Development Center, Urban League Twin Cities delivers comprehensive financial counseling and homeownership programs designed to close the racial wealth gap. Certified counselors provide one-on-one guidance in credit building, debt reduction, personal budgeting, and mortgage readiness. The center also conducts first-time homebuyer education classes, assists families in securing down payment assistance grants, and provides foreclosure prevention counseling to preserve existing community homeownership and generational family assets.

The affiliate's youth education initiatives are anchored by the Black Gems program, a dynamic college and career readiness initiative for Black high school students. Black Gems combines academic tutoring, STEM workshops, arts immersion, and college campus tours with mentorship from Black professionals and community leaders. Complementing its youth programs, the organization delivers family support through the Kinship Navigator initiative, which offers case management, legal navigation, and respite resources for grandparents and extended family members raising children in relative care.

The organization also operates broad community stabilization services, including crisis intervention support, emergency assistance coordination, and digital access programs that connect families with essential community services. These comprehensive programs address immediate family needs while fostering long-term educational and financial stability across diverse Minneapolis and Saint Paul neighborhoods. By coordinating wraparound supports, the Urban League helps households overcome sudden hardships, navigate public systems, and build enduring pathways toward self-reliance and generational prosperity.

Urban League Twin Cities also serves as a premier voice for civic engagement and public policy reform in Minnesota. The organization hosts community listening sessions, policy symposiums, candidate forums, and legislative town halls, while mobilizing young professionals through its ULTCYP chapter. By integrating direct human services with systemic advocacy, educational equity, and community leadership development, Urban League Twin Cities continues to champion community self-determination, economic prosperity, racial justice, and lasting social progress across the Twin Cities metropolitan area and beyond.
