Black Austin Tours was created by Javier Wallace, a native Austinite whose family arrived in the area as enslaved African people when Texas was still part of Mexico. That history is not background for these tours. It is the through-line. Javier completed his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, researching how race, class, gender and migration shape educational access, and he brings that lens to the streets, the buildings and the stories the standard city tour leaves out. Powerful stories, passionate guides, and an Austin most visitors never hear about.

Hoover's Cooking has been serving Texas home cooking in Austin since 1998. Hoover Alexander found the business at the Night Hawk while he was at the University of Texas, rolling pie dough, making gumbo and covering for the head chef on his days off, and learned the trade from the ground up. The plates are the ones the name promises: smoked meats, chicken-fried steak, greens, cornbread and the sides that belong beside them. In 2011 Hoover opened the Soular Foods Garden trailer to close the gap between soulful cooking and food fresh from the garden, planting urban gardens and pushing more balanced eating with the same voice he uses in the dining room.

Out tha Box Productions, the studio's nonprofit, sponsors performance opportunities so students have somewhere to take what they learn.
