Diverse-Owned Restaurants in Austin to Eat At in 2026
Updated August 31, 2026 5 min readLocal Guide

On this page (9 sections)
Austin's food conversation is usually about barbecue and tacos, and this list is mostly about neither. It is catfish, injera, oxtail, etouffee, a cheesesteak made by two brothers from central Jersey, and an ice cream taco. Thirteen restaurants and food businesses, four bakeries and two bars across the metro, with several of the best in Pflugerville, Cedar Park and Leander rather than downtown.
Each links to its profile, where the ownership tag shows its source. The Austin hub has the rest.
Quick answer
- Hoover's Cooking for Texas home cooking, open since 1998.
- Mr. Catfish & More for whole fried catfish and the Sunday buffet.
- Habesha Ethiopian for a long dinner.
- Island Fork for rasta pasta, Tony's Jamaican Food for oxtail, both in Pflugerville.
- Cajun Skillet in Cedar Park for etouffee and gumbo.
- R&B's Steak and Fries on East 6th for a cheesesteak.
- Sans Bar on Congress for an alcohol-free cocktail.
- Suga's Cakery for a custom cake, Gigi's Cupcakes for cupcakes.
- Lucille's Catering or 3 Small Plates Catering when the meal has to come to you.
- Taco Sweets for an ice cream taco, which is exactly what it sounds like.
Sit-down dinners
Hoover's Cooking is the institution. Hoover Alexander found the restaurant business at the Night Hawk while he was at the University of Texas, rolling pie dough and covering for the head chef, and has been cooking Texas home food in Austin since 1998. In 2011 he opened the Soular Foods Garden trailer to close the gap between soulful cooking and food fresh from a garden, which tells you how he thinks about a plate.
Mr. Catfish & More builds around the whole catfish, fried to a golden crunch, with Southern classics either side of it and a Sunday buffet worth planning the week around.
Habesha Ethiopian is a restaurant and bar with room for an intimate meal, a dinner party or a business table, and the staff arrange the space around whichever it is.
R&B's Steak and Fries started as a trailer on 5th Street in April 2019. Brothers Arman and Kris "Boo" Elliott spent childhood summers in Austin, moved from central Jersey for good in 2015 and 2017, and now hold Austin Monthly's title for best fries in the city and Eat This, Not That!'s for best cheesesteak in Texas.
Caribbean and Cajun, mostly north of town
Island Fork in Pflugerville cooks jerk chicken, jerk salmon, oxtail, curry goat and brown stew chicken, and rasta pasta is the dish people come back for. Tony's Jamaican Food, also Pflugerville, makes a fair claim to the most authentic Jamaican comfort food in Texas, and the oxtail is where to start.
Cajun Skillet in Cedar Park went from food truck to storefront on North Bell Boulevard. Crawfish etouffee, chicken and sausage gumbo, blackened shrimp, dirty rice and po'boys, and the roux is made the way someone from Louisiana would check for first.
Catering and food you take home
Two caterers worth knowing. Lucille's Catering does soul food and Southern-inspired menus for weddings and corporate events. 3 Small Plates Catering runs interactive stations and chef-led courses that move between cuisines, cooking out of a shared kitchen on Comsouth in Austin. Aphrodite Enterprises brings a raw bar and shucks East Coast oysters on site.
To take home: Me & the Bees Lemonade, freshly squeezed with Texas wildflower honey and flaxseed, which began with two bee stings and a lemonade stand. Soul Popped Popcorn, soul-food-inspired flavors built in a kitchen rather than a lab. Stroop Club, traditional caramel stroopwafels. Caribreoso Flavour Boutique if you would rather cook it yourself.
Bakeries
| Where | What to order |
|---|---|
| Suga's Cakery, Pflugerville | Custom cakes, allergy friendly. Strawberry de la Creme took first at the Williamson County Fair |
| Noble Delights Bakery, Leander | Custom cakes to order, vanilla with hazelnut filling |
| Gigi's Cupcakes, Bee Cave | Cupcakes and celebration cakes |
| Taco Sweets, Austin | Ice cream tacos, shakes and floats |
Custom cakes normally want a week or more of notice, and Suga's will take gluten-friendly, vegan, eggless and dairy-free requests.
A drink after
Sans Bar at 918 Congress has served premium alcohol-free cocktails since 2017, on the premise that a night out does not need the alcohol to be a night out. It also runs a ten-week academy for people who want to open an alcohol-free bar of their own.
ZODI'X Cigar Lounge in Round Rock keeps one of the largest walk-in humidors in Texas, with daily, monthly and annual memberships.
What the record does not cover yet
The food listings here are concentrated in Austin, Pflugerville and Cedar Park. Georgetown, San Marcos, Kyle, Buda and Bastrop have no restaurant in the record at all, and the metro's barbecue towns, Lockhart, Taylor and Driftwood, are represented by one listing between them, which is a gap in what has been sourced rather than a comment on the barbecue.
If you run a kitchen in one of those towns, a free listing puts it in front of the readers already looking.
Common mistakes
- Driving downtown for dinner. Six of these kitchens are in Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander or Bee Cave.
- Turning up at a caterer. Lucille's, 3 Small Plates and Aphrodite cook for events and have no dining room.
- Expecting a bar at Sans Bar. There is no alcohol, by design.
- Leaving a custom cake to the week of. Every baker here works to order.
FAQ
Where should I eat first?
If you want one meal that explains the list, Hoover's Cooking. It has been open since 1998 and cooks the food the city grew up on.
Are any of these open on Sundays?
Mr. Catfish & More runs a Sunday buffet, which is the one most people plan around. Hours change, so check the listing or the restaurant's own site before travelling.
Which of these deliver or cater?
Lucille's Catering, 3 Small Plates Catering and Aphrodite Enterprises are catering businesses. Several of the restaurants take catering orders as well, and the packaged foods all ship.
How are these businesses verified?
Each listing names the source its ownership tag came from and shows a verification status. Nothing is inferred, and the source is on the page rather than in a footnote.
