About Marble Falls Pride Fest
The Highland Lakes Equality Center hosts an annual Pride festival in Marble Falls each June. The free event at Johnson Park features live music, food, local vendors, performances and community resources. The center's first major event, Equality Fest, was held in 2021.
The Highland Lakes Equality Center grew out of conversations, one-on-one meetings, lunches and a few potlucks, and it began in earnest in the summer of 2017. Its founding leaders wanted to reach people who felt unloved, unworthy or forgotten, whether from their own experience or from watching loved ones go through it. Rather than keep meeting as a small weekly group, they decided to open their circle to others looking for the same acceptance and friendship.
Today the nonprofit supports LGBTQIA+ people, allies and family members across the Highland Lakes, with members also coming from the greater Austin area. It offers resources for learning about the LGBTQIA+ community, finding safe spaces and getting mental health support. Donations help pay for educational seminars, social events and services such as counseling and help with legal name and gender changes.
The center hosts social events every month, including meetups at restaurants that are B.R.A.V.E. (Business Respecting and Valuing Everyone) partners, and gatherings at businesses, homes and other venues around the area. Most socials are free, though some hosts ask guests to bring a dish and their own drinks. Fundraisers such as its Gay Prom charge admission, and donors sometimes buy passes to give away to people who ask for them. The June festival in Marble Falls is the center's largest outdoor event of the year.
