Jersey Pride

Jersey Pride is New Jersey's statewide LGBTQ+ Pride celebration and describes itself as the largest and oldest in the state. A parade passes through the center of Asbury Park, followed by a festival with community groups, businesses, a rally, a food court and a family zone. Attendance normally surpasses 20,000.

The parade starts at Asbury Park City Hall and heads south on Main Street, turns left on Cookman Avenue toward the ocean, then left again onto Grand Avenue. It follows Grand north to Sunset Avenue and turns right to finish at the rally and festival grounds. Festival admission covers the rally area, food court, family zone and all entertainment, and tickets can be bought at the gate in cash or online in advance.

Jersey Pride, Inc. also runs programming beyond the June festival. Its fall event, United Out Loud, combines a teach-in and a showcase aimed at civic engagement before the midterm elections, with short sessions on voting rights, ballot access and policy, sets from comedians, spoken word artists and musicians between talks, and an evening concert. Advocacy groups are on hand to help attendees get involved.

Featured speakers include the founder and publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, one of the last surviving participants in the 1969 Stonewall uprising; a co-founder of the Tyler Clementi Foundation, who works to end bullying; and LGBTQ civil rights advocate James Dale, whose challenge to the Boy Scouts' exclusion of gay members reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000.

Pride events celebrate LGBTQ+ people and mark the Stonewall uprising of June 1969. Most combine a parade or march with a festival of performers, community groups, vendors and food.
