About Alexandria Pride
Alexandria Pride is a free community Pride fair organized by the city's LGBTQIA+ Task Force with the library and human services department. It grew from a library fair first held in 2018 and has offered health testing and vaccines, LGBTQ+ family story time, art workshops and music. The 2026 edition was held June 27 at John Carlyle Square Park.
Alexandria has recognized a Pride Week since 1988, and it has since grown into a full Pride Month with a festival each June. The city notes that it was the first locality in Virginia to extend protections to gay and lesbian residents through its human rights ordinance, and in September 2024 the City Council adopted a resolution declaring Alexandria a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.
The fair is built around local services. Exhibitors in 2026 included the Alexandria Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia, the League of Women Voters and several city offices, including aging and adult services and child welfare. Del Ray Community Partnership, Inova Pride, Kindred Tree Healing Center and VEG ER for Pets were among the sponsors. Organizations that want a table at a future fair register through the task force.
Historic Alexandria adds its own Pride programming. One recent offering was a Pride edition of Tavern Games Night at Gadsby's Tavern Museum, with LGBTQIA+ history trivia, a short talk on the Public Universal Friend and a cash bar with non-alcoholic options. Tickets were $10, proceeds benefit the city's historic museums, and the ballroom is up one flight of stairs with no elevator.
