Hawaii Island LGBTQ+ Pride

Hawaii Island LGBTQ+ Pride is a nonprofit that stages the annual Hilo Pride Parade and Festival at Mooheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo. The parade runs late morning and is followed by an afternoon festival.

Hawaii Island LGBTQ+ Pride held its first celebration in 2013. The organizers describe the parade and festival as a casual, fun gathering that brings LGBTQ people and their supporters on the Big Island together, with the aim of affirming their rights and their rightful place in a free society at a time that remains difficult for LGBTQ people in Hawaii and around the world.

The Pride Committee works with community partners to put on events throughout the year for LGBTQ residents and their ohana of supporters. The group says it keeps working to improve the annual event, with goals that include more outreach to LGBTQ youth, greater involvement from the Native Hawaiian community and more participation from the west side of the island. Its stated mission is to create opportunities for youth and the wider community to gather and celebrate love, diversity and equality. The organization is a registered nonprofit supported by tax-deductible donations.

Pride events celebrate LGBTQ+ people and mark the Stonewall uprising of June 1969. Most combine a parade or march with a festival of performers, community groups, vendors and food.
