People's Pride ICT

People's Pride ICT is a grassroots, free, all-ages Pride celebration in Wichita focused on community and accessibility, held without police or corporate sponsors.

People's Pride ICT is run by a coalition of queer and trans volunteers who describe it as a do-it-yourself event. Organizers say queer liberation cannot be sponsored by capitalism, so the event stays completely free, and they aim to build community through joy, absurdity, accessibility and hope while making room for people of every intersecting identity.

The program has included live music with a bring-your-own-picnic setup, local drag performances and a sober kink mixer held at Safe Streets Wichita on East Waterman Street. Parking on site is free, and the closest bus stop is at McLean and 30th Street, about 0.3 miles away.

Accessibility planning is spelled out in detail. Masks are encouraged, accessible restrooms are available and people who need accommodations can contact organizers in advance. Community responders from ICT Alerta handle safety on site, with first aid available and water in coolers at the welcome booth and other stations. There is no air conditioning at the event, so heat-sensitive guests are asked to plan ahead, and sashed volunteers can help in an emergency.

Pride events celebrate LGBTQ+ people and mark the Stonewall uprising of June 1969. Most combine a parade or march with a festival of performers, community groups, vendors and food.
