Chapel Hill Pride Promenade

The Chapel Hill Pride Promenade is a short parade down Franklin Street organized by the town's Community Arts and Culture division as part of Chapel Hill-Carrboro Small Town Pride. The fifth annual promenade on June 6, 2026 was led by a drum ensemble and ended at 140 West Franklin with live music, drag acts, a vendor market, art activities and drag story time.

Community Arts and Culture is a division of the Town of Chapel Hill, based on the ground floor of the Chapel Hill Public Library, and its stated purpose is to inspire creativity and celebrate community. The Pride Promenade is one part of the wider Chapel Hill-Carrboro Small Town Pride.

The 2026 day started early. Teens gathered at The Corner Teen Center at 10:30 a.m. to make signs, and Imbibe offered live jazz, a Cajun brunch and Pride sweets from 11:30. The crowd met at Peace and Justice Plaza at noon for featured speakers, then Batalá Durham, a samba reggae group formed in 2015 as part of an international music project rooted in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, led the 0.3-mile walk to 140 West Franklin Plaza.

The party at the plaza ran until 3 p.m. with Carrboro punk band Moon Riot, DJ Tausi, drag from KiKi Diamond and friends, and a drag storytime led by Aurora Carlisle Nicole. The Scrap Exchange ran a reuse art station built on household recyclables, local muralist Mayanthi Jayawardena of Serendib Creative led a collaborative community mural, and Mike's Icys sold Pride-themed frozen treats.

Pride events celebrate LGBTQ+ people and mark the Stonewall uprising of June 1969. Most combine a parade or march with a festival of performers, community groups, vendors and food.

Chapel Hill Pride Promenade has included promenade, performances, vendor market, drag story time and art activities.

The organizer has not announced dates for 2027 yet. In 2026 it was held June 6, 2026. It usually falls early June.
